This Day In NYC History

On This Day in NYC History: Aug. 18, 1858: Fireworks Nearly Destroyed City Hall — New Yorkers celebrated the first transatlantic telegraph cable with fireworks over City Hall Park. Sparks entered the building’s dome, setting the roof ablaze by morning. The cable itself failed just three weeks later.
