New Yorkers Through History

Eliza Jumel

In the early 1800s, Eliza Jumel rose from poverty to become one of the wealthiest women in New York. Born to working-class parents, she married French wine merchant Stephen Jumel and acquired a large fortune through real estate investments, eventually owning a mansion in upper Manhattan. After her husband's death, she married former Vice President Aaron Burr at age 58, but filed for divorce within a year, accusing him of squandering her money. Known for her sharp business sense, flamboyant style, and later eccentric behavior, she remained a prominent figure in the city until her death in 1865. Her home, the Morris-Jumel Mansion, still stands today and is considered Manhattan’s oldest surviving house.
