A Bold Proposal: NYC Considers City-Owned Pharmacies — New Yorkers battling rising prescription costs might soon see a major relief, as the Vanderbilt Policy Accelerator has unveiled a compelling plan for the city to establish its own network of pharmacies. This innovative proposal aims to significantly lower drug prices by leveraging the immense purchasing power of NYC Health + Hospitals, while simultaneously offering a lifeline to struggling independent pharmacies. The initiative comes at a crucial time, especially with chain pharmacy stores across the five boroughs seeing a dramatic 45% decline since 2019. However, implementing such a wide-reaching public health initiative will undoubtedly face significant logistical hurdles and require substantial public investment to get off the ground. If successful, it could fundamentally reshape healthcare access for countless residents, making essential medications more affordable and accessible.

Knicks Celebrate Historic Win with First-Ever Ticker-Tape Parade — The city is buzzing with excitement after the New York Knicks clinched their first championship title since 1973, a victory that has prompted Mayor Zohran Mamdani to announce a ticker-tape parade. Set for Thursday, June 18, the celebration will kick off at 10 a.m. at Battery Park, proceeding north up Broadway before culminating in a ceremony at City Hall. This will be the very first ticker-tape parade ever dedicated solely to the Knicks, due to former Mayor John Lindsay, who famously put a halt to such grand public celebrations back in the 1970s. Full parade route details here.

Office-to-Apartment Conversions Pick Up Across Manhattan — Manhattan’s office-to-residential conversion boom is gaining momentum, with ten projects now underway that will bring nearly 3,000 new housing units to the borough. The conversions span the Financial District, Tribeca, NoHo, Midtown, and Hell’s Kitchen, turning underused office buildings into rentals and condos. Major projects include Pearl & Pine at 80 Pine Street with 713 rentals, 77 Water Street with 647 rentals, and 675 Third Avenue with 464 rentals. Several are using New York’s 467-m tax incentive program, which offers tax exemptions in exchange for affordable housing commitments. The trend is a practical response to two of NYC’s biggest problems: empty office space and a severe housing shortage.

NYC’s Grid Almost Ran Through Central Park — Manhattan’s famous street grid was originally designed in 1811 to stretch up the island with 155 numbered crosstown streets and 12 major avenues, long before Central Park existed. When the park was later created in the 1850s, it interrupted what could have been dozens of rectangular city blocks. A few old survey markers from the original grid plan have even been found inside Central Park, quietly marking intersections that were planned but never built.
