Amazon says it may move thousands of delivery jobs out of New York if a City Council bill backed by Mayor Mamdani becomes law. The Delivery Protection Act would require the company to directly hire about 5,000 delivery workers who now work for third-party contractors. Amazon says it could instead shut its 15 last-mile warehouses in the city and cut 2,000 more jobs, pointing to Quebec, where it closed seven warehouses during a similar labor fight last year. The bill has about 34 co-signers and no vote scheduled, and people close to the talks expect a compromise that leaves both sides unhappy.
The Bronx is getting its first look at the $160 million park makeover planned around Bally's $4 billion casino at Ferry Point. Community board members weighed in Thursday on designs that add playgrounds, athletic fields, and tennis and pickleball courts around a 3-million-square-foot resort with a 2,000-person event center, billed as the largest private development in the borough's history. Bally's won one of the state's three downstate casino licenses in December; some residents are already raising concerns about transit access to the site.
Congestion pricing money is going underground. The MTA broke ground Thursday on four new elevators at the 42nd Street-Bryant Park/Fifth Avenue station, funded entirely by the Manhattan tolls. The project will make the B, D, F, M and 7 complex fully accessible, and signs posted through construction will tell riders the work is "made possible by congestion pricing."
Landlords trying to overturn the freeze asked a Manhattan judge for deeper access to city officials' phones, arguing City Hall ran an influence campaign on the Rent Guidelines Board's June vote. The city's top attorney raised the possibility of putting the landlords' own lawyer, former First Deputy Mayor Randy Mastro, on the witness stand, pointing out that Mastro called the board's chair himself before the 2025 vote. The freeze is already in effect, covering new one- and two-year leases that begin between this October 1 and September 30, 2027 on the city's roughly 1 million rent-stabilized apartments.

On This Day In NYC History

On October 19, 1977, the Concorde landed in New York for the first time, ending a 19-month fight to keep the supersonic jet out of JFK. Police helicopters circled the runway to make sure it arrived untouched, and onlookers said it sounded no louder than a regular plane.
