On This Day in NYC History: Sep. 7, 1914: The Farley Post Office Opens— The monumental post office across from Penn Station opens on Eighth Avenue, carrying the inscription "Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from their appointed rounds." Everyone thinks it's the official motto of the U.S. Postal Service. It isn't - the Postal Service has no motto. The line is Herodotus, describing Persian couriers, and the building's architect just liked it.
