Former US Representative, Shirley Chisholm

Shirley Chisholm
Born in Brooklyn to Barbadian and Guyanese parents, Shirley Chisholm made history in 1968 as the first Black woman elected to the U.S. Congress. Representing Bedford-Stuyvesant, she fought fiercely for the poor, for women, and for working-class families. In 1972, she ran for president—becoming the first Black candidate to seek a major party’s nomination. Her campaign, dismissed by many, was decades ahead of its time. Chisholm shattered expectations not just for women, but for Black Americans who had long been excluded from the halls of power.
